Edmonton Elk Island National Park

Edmonton Elk Island National Park

Elk Island is a Canadian National Park sprawling over 190 kilometres of natural parkland, and although smaller than some, it is the largest fully enclosed park in Canada. It is located approximately 30 minutes from Edmonton in the beautiful Beaver Hills. As the name suggests, the area was abundant with beaver before the 19th century, when fur traders nearly caused their extinction. Today the park is a thriving and growing sanctuary for beavers, elk, and many other animals.

Elk Island has the largest population of hoofed (ungulates) mammals in Canada and back in 1906 was deemed an elk sanctuary. The unique landscape provides shelter and plenty of water for numerous animals, including the coyote, bison, elk, moose, deer, beaver, lynx, and porcupine. Although they are not seen often, timber wolves and black bears roam within the park. Elk Island plays a vital role in the conservation of many animals that now reside in the park. In 2017 Beaver Hills was granted UNESCO Biosphere Reserve’s designation, global recognition of the park’s commitment to conservation and sustainable development.

At various times throughout the year, over 250 bird species can be spotted in the park. Some of the most notable ones include trumpeter swans, American Bitterns, red-tailed hawks, double-breasted cormorants, great blue herons, and American white pelicans, just to name a few. A trumpeter swan re-introduction program started in 1987 and now has mating pairs returning to the park. Another re-introduction program has seen great success, with a hearty and growing beaver population. Visitors will see and learn that conservation is a key part of Elk Island.

Elk Island offers so much lush beauty with its natural boreal forest and aspen parkland. This magnificent park is open 24 hours a day and all year round. Winter offers many exciting activities for visitors of all ages, including unserviced camping, hiking, wildlife watching, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, sledding, and shelters to build a fire.

Summer brings a whole new season of activities to indulge in, like golfing, hiking, mountain biking, unserviced camping, wildlife watching, and canoeing/kayaking. In 2006 the Beaver Hills dark-sky opened, allowing visitors the chance to view the beautiful night sky without the interference of artificial light pollution. It takes star gazing to a whole new level. Spread out a blanket, lie down and catch a meteor shower, check out the constellations, or count stars with the kids.

Seeing the bison roaming in the park, only 30-40 feet from visitors while walking or hiking a trail, is a breathtaking experience. Visitors can see bison, elk, or moose roaming the park, and photograph them that close is a rare opportunity. The majestic beauty of nature is seen in a day-time visit, but Elk Island likes to show off the exquisite beauty of the night also. So many people visit the park throughout the night, make a campfire, gaze upon the stars, and hopefully catch a glimpse of the Northern lights

It is a rare and wonderful park. A definite top sight to see in Edmonton for the adventure-seeking or those who want to kick back, relax and take in all the beauty nature offers.
