Edmonton Telus World of Science

Edmonton Telus World of Science

Looking for an excellent way for the family to spend the day in Edmonton? Spending the day at Telus World of Science is sure to provide a day full of adventure, fun, and maybe learning something new too. Located in the heart of the city, Telus is a convenient stop on Edmonton’s top attractions list.

Originally it opened as a planetarium but has expanded, and in 2005 after an eight million dollar donation and twenty-year partnership deal, it was renamed Telus World of Science. It has the largest planetarium dome theatre in Canada and attracts over half a million visitors each year. It is like stepping inside a giant laboratory with five fun and exciting permanent galleries to explore.

The Zeidler Dome is an immersive full-dome video experience. It is both a planetarium and theatre taking visitors on a cosmic journey through the universe. Some of the most recent shows include We are the Stars(explore what we are made of), Aurorae ( the Northern Lights- share in the Indigenous Peoples wisdom conveyed by the stars ), Legends of the Northern Sky, Secret of the Cardboard Rocket (travel on a magical cardboard rocket), To Space and Back ( from far-reaching space back to our own planet), and Expedition Dinosaur. All these fantastic shows are included in the Telus admission.

If you want to check out a magnificent educational movie experience or a current Hollywood blockbuster, Telus also houses an IMAX theatre. It is a four-story by a six-story screen with amazing surround sound that immerses visitors into the movie. The IMAX does require a separate admission ticket.

The Telus World of Science offers loads of fun, exciting, and adventurous exhibits of all kinds and to suit all ages. The S.P.A.C.E. (Space, Planets, Astronauts, Comets, Etc) Gallery allows you to drive a replica MARS Rover, fire a rocket, and check out a computer program that turns your face into an alien. The Space place is an excellent introduction to astronautics and astronomy. The Robotics Laboratory features Lego Mindstorms Centre, where visitors program pre-built robots to perform tasks and missions.

The Syncrude Environment Gallery features interactive displays of meteorology, hydrology, ecology, and geology of Alberta. The highlight, the Science on a Sphere, an impressive six-foot sphere projector that enhances current environmental science presentations. Get energized by becoming a Rock Hound, Ice Detective, Eco-explorer, or Storm Tracker in each of these interactive displays. Don’t miss the chance to create lightning and tornadoes.

The Body Fantastic is a carnival-style atmosphere all about the anatomy and physiology of the human body. Three-dimensional models display how the body and brain work. One of the weirdest exhibits is the Gallery of the Gross. Yes, it houses strange specimens from the body, such as earwax, urine, and more. Check out your sense of smell with a test to identify different scents, and try your hand at anatomy with a life-size X-ray puzzle.

The Science Garage is a place that encourages guests to get hands-on and create. A dedicated maker space is fully stocked with building materials to build your own take-home project or experiment. There is a Kinetic dance floor to try some dance moves; you can scale the Freedom Climber Wall, stop and strike a pose on the Frozen Shadow Wall, design a flying aircraft at the Vertical Wind Tunnels, learn about energy at the Magnetic Ball wall. Scientific staff members are on hand to answer questions, educate, or offer project assistance.

CuriousCity is a truly hands-on tactile adventure gallery for children eight years and younger. The space is designed as a mini Edmonton for kids to play, investigate and learn. There is a tunnel of sedimentary layers to crawl through in the River Valley with light-up animals. Kids can create lighting displays on the High Level Bridge. Practice being an air traffic controller at YEG Control Tower or take a turn flying the EIA Airplan. Climb the Fort Edmonton treehouse or take a turn at the water exploration zone. There is no shortage of awesome activities in CuriousCity.

The Main gallery houses traveling Exhibits such as Star WARS, The BODY WORLDS: The Cycle of Life, Indiana Jones and the Adventure of Archeology, Harry Potter: the Exhibition. Dinosaurs Unearthed, Beyond Rubik’s Cube, and the International Exhibition of Sherlock Holmes. With floor-to-ceiling windows and the beautiful Esso Skywalk above, it is an inviting reception area overlooking the entire centre. The Esso Skywalk also includes interactive mind game displays.

These are just some of the many thrilling experiences awaiting visitors to the Telus World of Science. The centre is open year-round and only closes on Christmas Day, and can be rented for birthday parties or corporates events. It is located in Downtown Edmonton close to other attractions such as the Edmonton Zoo and the Alberta Aviation Museum. A visit to Telus World of Science is a unique and fun-filled way to spend the day.
